James Greenfield on The Glove Puppet
|
One man and two women. The women's thoughts are for him. His thoughts are mainly for himself. And this, perhaps, is not uncommon in that kind of triangle. The Glove Puppet, Armchair Theatre, Thursday, is about the dreadful, comical, and utterly believable way in which a man really believes he is so important that both his women should understand him for a start, and put up with him in a devoted way. Hugo (Richard Pasco) chases Diana (Vickery Turner) until she catches him. Diana has a raging rival for Hugo's affections, a girl called Daphne (Jacqueline Pearce). But muddle-headed Daphne isn't really in the same league as Diana and the battle is already well won when the play opens. In nostalgic moments Hugo reminisces over Daphne. Meanwhile, Diana is using influence with a well connected relative to boost the fortunes and ambitions of her husband. Suddenly, Hugo gets unexpected news of Daphne. And he is horrified to hear she is working in a tatty Soho club as a hostess. Fascinated, he goes to see her... James Greenfield Thursday 30th May 1968
