Show Worth A Visit - If You Dare
|
A night of gripping tension is promised this week for audiences at Basingstoke's Haymarket. Wait Until Dark, Frederick Knott's classic thriller is so powerful you are too absorbed even to bite your nails. Directed by Cyril Frankel, it stars Jacqueline Pearce of Blake's 7 fame and Roy Boyd who plays Eddie in Crossroads. Jacqueline Pearce is Sussie Henderson, the blind girl whose husband is lured out of their flat leaving her to be terrorised by three con men. They want a doll full of heroin, given to Sussie's unwitting husband. The plot is deliciously complex and unwinds terrifyingly. Jacqueline Pearce is utterly convincing in her blindness and her spirited independence makes her ordeal more piteous. Roy Boyd as Roat is a truly repulsive hulking horror. Deft lighting changes and a meticulously planned set make the action run swiftly. The audience received the scuffles and tension with gasps of horrified delight. It runs until April 4.
